What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is the name for a group of naturally occurring minerals that separate into strong fibers. The fibers are heat-resistant, extremely thin and extremely durable, and, because of these qualities, asbestos has become very useful in construction and industry. In your living or work place it may or may not pose a health hazard to the occupants. When it can be crushed by hand pressure the material is considered FRIABLE. In this condition, fibers can be released and pose a health risk. However, as long as the material is kept stable and well-sealed, the material is considered safe until damaged in some way.

Why Is Lead Paint Dangerous?

Many houses built before 1978 have paint that contains lead. Lead paint chips can pose serious health hazards, if not taken care of properly. In 1996 a federal law was passed that requires individuals receive certain information before renting, buying, or renovating homes or businesses built prior to1978. Sellers have to disclose known information on lead-based paint hazards before selling a house or industrial property. Sales contracts will include a federal form about lead-based paint in the building. Buyers will have up to 10 days to check for lead paint hazards and they should do so within this timeframe since this is a very serious and dangerous issue.

Lead Paint is dangerous to children.

One out of every eleven children in the United States has dangerous levels of lead in their bodies. Children who even appear healthy can have dangerous levels of lead in their blood. Lead can get into the body by putting hands or other objects covered with lead dust in their mouths, eat paint chips or soil that contains lead, or breathe in lead dust. Lead can be more dangerous to children than adults because children's growing bodies absorb more lead and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead. If not detected early, children with high levels of lead in their bodies can suffer from: damage to the brain and nervous system, behavior and learning problems (such as hyperactivity), slowed growth, hearing problems and headaches can arise from lead paint exposure.
